The renovation story.
Barn Owl Cottage and the neighbouring Grade II listed Seaves Barn were once part of a working family farm, with buildings dating back as far as 1427. By the time Annie and Ken began their journey, the barns had fallen into a state of complete disrepair. What followed was a true labour of love.
Over the course of two years, from 2011 to 2013, Annie and Ken carefully restored the historic stone buildings, taking great pride in preserving their character while bringing them back to life for modern living. Every stage of the project was approached with respect for the barn's heritage, combining traditional craftsmanship with thoughtful design.
During the renovation, Annie and Ken spent countless hours travelling back and forth along the country lanes, checking on progress and watching the transformation take shape. It was on these evening journeys that they began to notice barn owls gliding silently along the hedgerows at dusk, hunting in the nearby fields.
These quiet, magical moments felt symbolic of the barn's rebirth β and inspired the name Barn Owl Cottage.
Today, the cottage stands as a beautiful example of how historic rural buildings can be lovingly preserved and reimagined. Thoughtfully restored and immaculately presented, it offers guests the chance to experience the charm, history, and tranquillity of the Yorkshire countryside β a place shaped by care, patience, and a genuine love for this special corner of North Yorkshire.
