Yorkshire Lavender

Wander through Yorkshire Lavender — colourful hillside gardens, countryside views, family play, dog-friendly spaces and a relaxed tea-room stop close to Barn Owl Cottage.

A colourful Yorkshire day out close to Barn Owl Cottage

Yorkshire Lavender is one of the easiest local outings from Barn Owl Cottage, set in 60 acres overlooking the Vale of York. The site combines lavender fields, specialist gardens, a children’s play area, a plant nursery, shop and food-and-drink options, making it a surprisingly flexible place for families, couples and anyone wanting a gentler day out.

For Families

Families have more to do here than simply walk through the lavender. Garden admission includes access to the lavender fields, specialist garden areas and a Kids’ play area, and Yorkshire Lavender also runs dedicated family events such as its Kids Days. That makes it a good choice for younger children or families wanting something calmer than a theme park while still having a proper activity for the children.

For Walkers

This is best thought of as gentle garden walking rather than a long countryside hike. Visitors can wander through the lavender fields and landscaped garden areas at their own pace, enjoying open views across the Vale of York. It suits people who want fresh air and scenery without committing to a strenuous route.

Dog Friendly

Yorkshire Lavender is genuinely dog friendly. Dogs are welcome in the gardens, shop, plant nursery and certain areas of the tea room, provided they are kept on a lead at all times. That makes it an easy option for guests staying at Barn Owl Cottage who do not want to leave their dog behind for the day.

For Couples

The combination of lavender fields, landscaped gardens and long views over the Yorkshire countryside makes this especially pleasant for couples wanting a slower outing. You can wander the gardens, stop for tea or lunch, browse the nursery and shop, and simply enjoy the setting without needing to follow a timetable or rush from one attraction to another.

For Food & Drink

Yorkshire Lavender has several food-and-drink options. The Tea Room by Harri & Ed serves brunch dishes, salads, sandwiches, sweet treats, hot and cold drinks and a children’s menu, while the Horse Box offers drinks, cakes, scones, tray bakes and savoury snacks. Afternoon tea and pre-packed picnic options are also available with advance booking.

What to expect

Expect a relaxed, seasonal visitor attraction rather than an all-day theme park. You can spend time walking through the gardens and lavender fields, enjoy the views, let younger children use the play area, stop for food and browse the plant nursery and shop. The lavender itself changes through the season, so the experience in April can look very different from the full colour of summer.

Annie-style local tip

If the lavender itself is the main reason for your visit, check what is flowering before you go rather than assuming every summer day will look like a purple postcard. Give yourself time to wander instead of rushing around the gardens, and leave room for something from the tea room. Lavender viewing appears to work considerably better with cake.

Before you go

The main 2026 season runs from 1 April to 31 August, with the gardens open daily from 10am to 5pm during that period. The Tea Room and Horse Box have their own opening days and times, so check those if food is part of your plan. Garden admission is ticketed, while entry to the tea room, shop and plant nursery is free. Dogs must remain on leads, and afternoon tea or pre-packed picnics need to be booked 48 hours in advance.
