Sutton Bank National Park Centre
Discover Sutton Bank — spectacular Yorkshire views, family trails, outdoor play, dog-friendly walks, cycling and a welcoming café at the edge of the North York Moors.

Big views and a proper breath of fresh air
Sutton Bank National Park Centre is one of those places where the scenery does most of the work for you. Sitting high above the Vale of York on the edge of the North York Moors, it combines dramatic views with walking, cycling, family activities and easy access to the surrounding countryside. The centre itself is free to enter, so it also works well for a simpler day out where you mainly want fresh air, a walk and something nice to eat afterwards.
For Families
Families have plenty to do without needing to tackle a long walk. The outdoor play area includes treehouses, a stone castle, roundhouses, a large sandpit, mud kitchen and natural climbing features, while the centre also has family-friendly trails and displays. It is a particularly good option for younger children because you can mix a short walk with play rather than expecting them to admire the scenery for three hours straight.
For Walkers
Sutton Bank is excellent for walking, from short accessible routes to longer stretches along the Cleveland Way. One of the easiest options is the short walk to the famous viewpoint, while more energetic visitors can continue along the escarpment towards the Kilburn White Horse and surrounding countryside. The landscape is open and dramatic, so even a relatively short route can feel like a proper Yorkshire walk.
Dog Friendly
Dogs are welcome across the National Park Centre, its grounds and inside the café, provided they are kept on a short lead. That makes Sutton Bank particularly easy for guests staying at Barn Owl Cottage with a dog, because you do not have to split the day between dog-friendly and non-dog-friendly parts of the attraction.
For Couples
Sutton Bank is a lovely choice for couples who want a simple, scenic day rather than a formal visitor attraction. You can take a walk along the escarpment, stop at the viewpoint, enjoy the huge countryside views and then head back to the café for coffee or lunch. It is especially good when you want somewhere that feels memorable without needing a packed itinerary.
For Food & Drink
The on-site café, In the Wilde, serves brunch dishes, freshly baked scones, homemade cakes, ice cream, daily specials and hot and cold drinks. There are also children’s options and takeaway picnic boxes, which are useful if you want to eat outside or take something with you on a walk. The café is dog friendly too, so nobody has to nominate one person to sit outside guarding the spaniel.
What to expect
Expect an outdoor-focused visit with a National Park Centre, café, shop, toilets, play area and plenty of access to surrounding walks. There is level access into the centre, accessible parking and accessible toilet facilities, and the main viewpoint can be reached by a relatively easy route. There are also cycle facilities, including bike parking, a repair station and e-bike chargers.

Annie-style local tip
You do not need to turn Sutton Bank into an expedition. Take the short walk to the viewpoint, let the children explore the play area, have something to eat and enjoy where you are. If everyone still has energy afterwards, then extend the walk. Holidays are much more enjoyable when the route ends before somebody starts asking whether their legs have actually stopped working.
Before you go
Check the weather before travelling because Sutton Bank is exposed and can feel much windier and cooler than Brandsby. The National Park Centre is around six miles east of Thirsk and 7.5 miles west of Helmsley on the A170. Dogs must remain on short leads, and while entry to the centre is free, parking is chargeable. The café currently opens daily, but it is still worth checking the latest opening times before setting off.
