Flamingo Land Resort
Make a full day of Flamingo Land — a huge family attraction combining rollercoasters, children's rides and a zoo with more than 140 animal species.

A proper big family day out
Flamingo Land is one of the biggest family attractions within easy reach of Barn Owl Cottage. Set at Kirby Misperton between Malton and Pickering, it combines a large theme park with an award-winning zoo, so families can move between rides, animals and entertainment rather than committing the whole day to one type of activity. The resort offers thrill rides, family rides and attractions for younger children, making it especially useful for families with mixed ages.
For Families
Flamingo Land has a wide mix of rides for different age groups. Current family rides include attractions such as Muddy Duck Tractor Ride, Little Monsters Wacky Races, Cyclosoar, Splash Battle and Gallopers, while younger visitors also have dedicated children’s rides such as Jungle Carousel, Helitoys, Frog Hopper and Runaway Train. The zoo adds another completely different part of the day, which is particularly handy when one child wants rides and another would happily spend three hours watching animals.
For Food & Drink
There are numerous food and drink outlets around the resort, ranging from quick snacks and children’s favourites to cafés, bars and sit-down options. Picnic Planet, for example, serves hot dogs, ice cream and drinks close to Children’s Planet, while other outlets around the park offer different styles of food. The official Flamingo Land app also shows food and drink locations, which is useful when the family hunger emergency arrives with approximately six minutes’ warning.
What to expect
Expect a full-day attraction rather than somewhere to visit for an hour or two. Flamingo Land is spread across a large site, so it is worth deciding beforehand which rides and animals matter most to your family. The official app includes an interactive map, ride information, food and drink locations and live queue times while you are in the park, which can make planning the day much easier. Ride height restrictions vary, so families with younger children should check these before promising a particular attraction.

Annie-style local tip
Before you leave Barn Owl Cottage, let everyone choose one thing they really want to do. One person might choose the zoo, another a big rollercoaster and a younger child their favourite ride. Once everyone has had their must-do moment, the rest of the day becomes much more relaxed. And yes, an adult is entirely entitled to choose coffee as their must-do. That is not cheating.
Before you go
Check Flamingo Land’s current opening times, ticket prices, ride closures and height restrictions before travelling, as individual rides can be unavailable for maintenance and opening hours vary through the season. Well-behaved dogs are allowed in the Theme Park area and certain outdoor or conservatory food areas, but ordinary pet dogs are not allowed in the zoo or indoor venues, and dogs cannot accompany guests on rides. Because of those restrictions, I would not class Flamingo Land as one of Barn Owl Cottage’s main Dog Friendly recommendations.
