Castle Howard & Skelf Island

Explore Castle Howard and Skelf Island — a grand Yorkshire estate with gardens, lakes, woodland, family adventure play, walking routes and excellent places to eat.

A brilliant day out close to Barn Owl Cottage

Castle Howard is one of the strongest all-round days out near Barn Owl Cottage because it genuinely offers something for several different kinds of visitor. The house sits within a large designed landscape of lakes, temples, follies, woodland, statues and formal gardens, while families also have Skelf Island Adventure Playground to enjoy. The estate is large enough for a full day, but it also works well if you simply want to wander the gardens, stop for lunch and take things slowly.

For Families

Skelf Island is a real adventure playground set within the Castle Howard estate, with play structures built around the trees and landscape. Castle Howard also promotes family-friendly activities such as wildlife spotting, statue trails, picnics and exploring the grounds, which means children have plenty to do beyond simply looking around the house. It works especially well for mixed-age families because the adults still get the gardens, architecture and scenery while the children have somewhere exciting that feels made for them.

For Walkers

Castle Howard is genuinely good for walking, with estate routes and access to the surrounding Howardian Hills countryside. Within the grounds, visitors can wander through formal gardens, Ray Wood, lakeside areas and landscaped parkland, while the estate also publishes walking information for those who want something longer than a gentle stroll. It is a good choice if you want a walk that combines scenery, history and somewhere pleasant to stop afterwards.

Dog Friendly

Dogs are welcome in the Castle Howard grounds and must be kept on a short lead. They are also welcome in several café areas and selected indoor food outlets, and water bowls are provided around the estate. Dogs are not permitted inside the House or Skelf Island Adventure Playground, except assistance dogs, so families visiting specifically for the playground need to keep that in mind.

For Couples

Castle Howard works beautifully for couples because there is no pressure to rush around and see everything. The grounds include lakes, formal gardens, woodland, temples and the peaceful Walled Garden, giving you plenty of places to wander, stop, talk and enjoy the scenery. It is the sort of place where a simple walk, lunch and a slow look around can feel like a proper day out without needing a packed itinerary.

For Food & Drink

Castle Howard has several places to eat, including the Fitzroy Restaurant, Boathouse Café, Courtyard Café and Coffee Shop. The estate also has a Farm Shop selling local produce, bread, cheeses, deli food and other Yorkshire products, which is useful if you want to take something back to Barn Owl Cottage. The Boathouse Café beside the Great Lake is particularly well placed for a relaxed stop during a walk around the grounds.

What to expect

Expect a large estate rather than a quick attraction. You can spend time exploring the House, formal gardens, woodland, lakes and monuments, visit Skelf Island with children, stop for lunch or coffee, and potentially combine the visit with a longer walk. The Great Lake, South Lake, Atlas Fountain, Ray Wood and Walled Garden are all part of the estate, so how much you see really depends on how energetic you feel on the day.

Annie-style local tip

If you’re visiting with children, explore some of the gardens before heading to Skelf Island. If you’re visiting as a couple, do almost the opposite: don’t rush through the grounds trying to see everything. Pick a garden, take a walk, have lunch and let the day unfold. Castle Howard is one of those places that rewards wandering rather than stopwatch tourism.

Before you go

Check Castle Howard’s current opening times and ticket options before travelling because the House and Walled Garden have seasonal opening arrangements. If bringing a dog, remember the short-lead rule and that dogs cannot enter the House or Skelf Island. Food outlets also have their own opening times, so it is worth checking those if lunch is an important part of your plans.
